Complacency
(happy in your position unaware that certain dangers may exist)
Textual evidence to support
“I believed so strongly in Mr. Muhammad, that I would have hurled myself between him and an assassin” (293)
Explanation/Analysis of how it shows a relation to Icarus
Malcolm is complacent with his place within the nation of Islam, but later finds out Mr. Muhammad is jealous of him and his abilities/intelligence.
Failed ambition(not reaching a goal)
“Mr. Muhammad…would warm me with his expressions of his approval and confidence and me”
“He left me in charge of the Nation of Islam’s affairs” (292).

His goal was to be a good Muslim, worship E.M. and get others to convert to Islam. He does this, but we know that as he does this, his is failing (gaining enemies in white/black community)
Hubris (too much pride; arrogance in your abilities)
“I silently vowed to Allah, that any wings I wore had been put on by the religion of Islam” (293)

Malcolm unlike Icarus, he realizes that it is Islam that is allowing him to fly so high, and not be a hustler, criminal, dead
