Today our goal is to complete anything from this week's Caesar packet!!

Scene 4 summary:
During the battle, Young Cato is killed and Lucilius taken prisoner. Brought to Antony, Lucilius insists Brutus will never be taken alive.
Scene 5 summary:
Another part of the battlefield. Facing defeat, Brutus feels all is lost. He asks for 3 men to kill him but all refuse until Strato agrees to hold a sword for Brutus to run into it. Antony and Octavius arrive. Antony calls Brutus the "noblest Roman" and Octavius promises a noble funeral for him.

Antony and Octavius enter the battlefield at Phillipi with their army and Brutus and Cassius enter with their's. Octavius defies Antony's directions. They exchange insults. Brutus and Cassius say their final farewells.
Scene 2 summary:
Brutus sends Messala with orders for the forces across the field.
Scene 3 summary:
Cassius loses his battle to Antony. Cassius asks Pindarus to kill him after hearing info that leads him to believe they have lost the war, minutes before the news comes that Brutus has won his battle. Titinius kills himself. Brutus prepares for a second battle.

plot: Brutus and Cassius argue as Brutus accuses Cassius of corruption and greed--but they end on ok terms. Brutus tells Cassius Portia has killed herself. Messala tells them of all the killings in Rome and the triumverate army that is approaching. Brutus persuades Cassius to meet the enemy at Philippi. Brutus sees the ghost of Caesar who promises to meet him at Philippi.

Act 4

Scene 1
setting: Antony's house in Rome
plot: Antony, Octavius, and Lepidus now rule Rome as a triumverate (3). The 3 meet to draw a list of their enemies that must be killed and changing Caesar's will. Antony expresses to Octavius his low opinion of Lepidus. Antony and Octavius discuss how to defeat the army of Brutus and Cassius.

Scene 2
setting: A camp near Sardis--in front of Brutus's tent.
plot: Brutus seems displeased at the way events are developing, and he tells his servant Cassius's new cold and distant attitude. (why do you think this may be?) Cassius and Brutus go into a tent and talk about their disagreements.

Fourth: Attempt to finish pages 41-42 in the the packet on: metaphor, simile, personification, imagery--PLEASE TRY THEM FOR HOMEWORK.

Homework help:
Review the following terms in your new packet. (No need to copies these definition--they are in the packet--I'd just highlight them)
metaphor--comparison between 2 unlike objects (no like or as)
simile--comparison between 2 unlike objects using the words "like" or "as" in the comparison
personification--giving human qualities or characteristics to non-human objects
imagery--using words to appeal to the 5 senses: sight, touch, taste, hearing, or smell (usually lots of adjectives)

Scene 3:
setting:The streets of Rome
characters: an angry mob of Roman citizens
plot: A famous Roman poet "Cinna" mistaking him for the conspirator "Cinna." The crowd eventually realizes they have the wrong man, but kill him anyways because they are so angry. They rush through the city looking for the true murders of Caesar.

characters: Brutus, Antony, citizens of Rome
plot: Brutus speaks before the commoners about why Caesar needed to die--the crowd agrees with Brutus. Then, Marc Antony speaks and the crowd is swayed and decides to pursue the conspirators and kill them. Octavius arrives in Rome. Brutus and Cassius flee.

Copy these notes in either your notebook or somewhere in the Act 3 section of your packet (page 32?):

*Ambition/ambitious-having or showing a strong desire and determination to succeed (Antony of Caesar); some also use it to mean power-hungry (Brutus of Caesar)

*Honorable-worthy of honor: highly respected

Synonyms: honest, moral, ethical, principled, righteous

(Marc Antony calls the conspirators honorable—is he being serious?—he says they are, then describes their actions)
*noble--having a high rank or social status; having or showing fine personal qualities or high moral principles and ideals.

Mutiny-a rebellion overthrowing the “captain” or whoever is in authority/charge

This is probably the most famous scene in Julius Caesar. Remember, Marc Antony promised Brutus he would abide by 3 rules in his speech at Caesar's funeral:
1. He would let Brutus speak first
2. He wouldn't put any blame on the conspirators
3. He can praise Caesar as much as he wants, but tell the people the conspirators allowed him to
As we read, try to think about if Antony abides by these rules or not (this will be the Quick Write #3 topic)

Setting: The Capitol in Rome, 3/15
Characters: Caesar, Marc Antony, conspirators (Brutus, Cassius, etc.)
Plot: Caesar refuses to look at the letter of warning from Artemidorus. At the Capitol, the conspirators pretend to plead a case, and stab Caesar to death. Mark Antony flees, but Brutus persuades the others to let him live. Antony returns and pretends to be an ally of the conspirators but secretly he plans to strike back with the help of Octavius Caesar.
