We will start with the movie-- (Period 1 willl start with the survey--see yesterday's post)
Note: we will watch yesterday's reading and part of tomorrow's reading (watching ahead of what we've read)

Whatever time that remains after the movie, you can work on:

• Chapter 8 questions
• Characterization (direct and indirect-STEAL) CHART FOR CH. 8
• Chapter 9 questions (from yesterday)

Direct/Indirect Characterization in Ch. 7

Remember,
Direct characterization--is when the narrator/author TELLS you something about a character--there isn't really any extra thinking required (you take their word for it usually)
Indirect characterization--is when you look at the: Speech, Thoughts, Effects on others, Actions, Looks, (STEAL) to make determinations based on this evidence--think adjectives! (smart, angry, crazy, etc.)

1. On one side of your worksheet write:
Chapter 7 reading
2. On the other side of your worksheet write:
Chapter 8 reading

3. At the top of the page for Chapter 7, write next to "Direct:" at the top: (this was in yesterday's reading/a question on yesterday's multiple choice):

"a true hustler--uneducated, unskilled at anything honorable", "nervy", "cunning"...(111)

4. We will read from the 2nd full paragraph on page 116, "'All through the war..." to the bottom of page 120, "...in a gambling house they opened."

5. Now, take some time and see what you can fill out for STEAL, with a partner--fill out BOTH columns if you can---please ask for help if you are struggling. If there is one you are convinced is not in the chapter at all, leave it blank or ask a friend.

Definitions of the central ideas for Quick Write #3:

oppression--The creation of a system of advantage, wherein power (social, political, economic, etc.) is concentrated in one group or groups, and is withheld from others.

systemic-of or relating to a system, especially as opposed to a particular part.

*So, systemic oppression is really being "held down" by "the system" that gives some groups advantages over others 

racial identity--a sense of a group or collective identity based on one's perception that he or she shares a common heritage with a particular racial group

*When we are done, I will show you a short video clip of the real Malcolm X speaking 
*Next, we will finish reading the Chapter 3, beginning on the bottom of page 53 in the book "The first liquor I drank"....
*Lastly, we will work on finishing our questions for worksheet #3 (#1-8)--PLEASE USE RACE IF POSSIBLE
