Act 1, Scene 2: Close-reading---Period 2 and 3 only----Quiz on Act 1, Scene 2 MONDAY

First: Please take the following notes in red and place them in the "Reading and Writing Strategies" section of your notes:

Ways to analyze the text of a play
1. Remember a play is meant to be seen, not just read--try to VISUALIZE what is happening!
2. Look at the stage directions (italics in parentheses)--what the actors should be doing as they speak the lines.
3. Look at words the actor is supposed to emphasize (italics)--why are these words important?
4. Content of the text--how are the actor's words important to his/her characterization

Second: Read and annotate the excerpt from 1.2 using the strategies above

  1. When Walter states his future is " Hanging over the edge of [his] days, he means that his future is weighing over his head in a teasing manner almost as if it's a little too late. ZH

  2. 1.) Walter means that he can see his future "plain as day" like he can see that liquor store he wants to invest in. "Cool, quiet-looking restaurants where them white boys are sitting back and talking 'bout things... don't look much older than me." Walter put emphasis on "plain as day" to make seem like he's out of reach for his dream to make money, but instead he's beseeching for it.

  5. Walter repeat the phrase "just waiting for me" because he is trying to persuade Mama to help him saying as if she doesn't help him, his life will never go anywhere as shown " Just waiting for me a big looming blank space full of nothing. Just waiting for me."
