Copy the following definitions/notes

We already learned ASIDE (where the character speaks to us while on stage), now we need...

Soliloquy--a speech in which a character speaks his/her thoughts aloud. Think of a "voice over" in a movie. The character is usually on stage alone, or with a light on him/her surrounded by darkness, not speaking to other characters and perhaps not even consciously addressing the audience.

The PURPOSE of a soliloquy is to reveal a character's inner thoughts, feelings, and plans to the audience. It also creates dramatic irony.

*Today we will take a look at Macbeth's soliloquy in  Act I, scene vii, as he tries to figure out what he wants to do about becoming king. He appears to be having 2nd thoughts about it...what are his reasons why? (let's write them down in our study guides).

*Then, he sees Lady Macbeth and she convinces him otherwise....how does she do this?

*In the end of Act II, what is his final decision/plan regarding Duncan?
