( claim—MAIN POINT) During the 19th century the role of women was basically a domestic one, meaning they played the part of wife and housekeeper for their husband. (EVIDENCE/EXAMPLE)In the story “The Best Sort of Husband” the character of Margaret feared that her prospective husband Mr. Bailey wanted her to be a “housekeeper and mother” to his “little orphans” (Kelly 294).
(EXPLANATION/ANALYSIS) In short, a woman was expected to play the role of a worker in the home. In the novel Pride and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Elizabeth feared she would also take on this role which is why she did not want to marry Mr. Collins even if it meant keeping her home (341).
