Last Day to work on the essay for Malcolm X

Today will be the last day you have in class for your Malcolm X essay. Today should be spent:
1. FIRST--finishing your planning document !
2. SECOND--begin your draft. REMEMBER--all handwritten essays must be final-copy quality!! I have essay paper for those who want it.
3. A few extra reminders on the paper:
Make sure to:
1. Have a heading
2. Underline and capitalize the TAG
3. Indent for new body paragraphs (min. 5: intro, 3 bodies and a conclusion)
4. Look over your essay for errors and turn in A FINAL COPY ONLY. If you don't have time, write a rough-draft in class today and then do your final copy over the weekend for homework---

Ways of getting started (opening statement):

1. Give a definition of the central idea you are using

2. Give a profound quote from Malcolm X that relates to your central idea

3. Give a general statement that introduces the topic

Malcolm X Essay: Day 1

Agenda: Due no later than Monday 12/2!!! 
1. We will go over and annotate the Malcolm X essay assignment and review the central ideas.
2. We will work together to brainstorm (worksheet link here)ideas for the essay and share them on the board.
3. We will use our brainstorming sheet to begin working on our planning document----I will show you an example first.
4. If you do not finish the planning sheet in class--take it home for homework!

Choose One Central Idea:

a. Racial Identity: Malcolm’s skin color affects the way he is treated in American society, and therefore influences the way he feels about himself. His racial identity ultimately influences the choices he made. This can also refer to the way people feel about their race and how it makes them feel.

b. Systemic Oppression: The ruling majority of whites did not allow blacks to fully enter American society. They did not have the same opportunities to succeed as whites. The system made it difficult for them to find wealth and success for themselves, so Malcolm felt that some were forced to turn to a life of crime in order to survive.  

c. Solidarity: Malcolm believes his people could better their situation if they would unite to fight the injustices in America together. He fears that many of his brothers and sisters have become so brainwashed that they believe they are inferior to whites and would not be willing to listen to what Malcolm teaches.  

d. Segregation vs. Integration: Malcolm does not believe his people should have to work to gain the acceptance of white American society.  He does not want them to change themselves to fit into white society. He is not working to unite with the white community but to empower his own people—he eases on this at the end of the book after leaving the Nation of Islam. This can also refer to how people separate and integrate themselves (ex. “Hill Negroes” in Boston)

In this workshop, we will focus on settings and characters for flash fiction. You'll use writing prompts to create your own unique and fun settings, make up characters to populate your settings, then give your characters quick problems to solve. At the end of each workshop, you will leave with a finished flash fiction piece. Open to writers of all abilities.
