"Past Present" Day 2: Compare/Contrast and Rhetorical Devices

Today we will:
 Read chunk #2 of "Past Present" by Jimmy Santiago Baca (Page 5, Paragraph 14-Page 9, Paragraph 28) together as a class.

**Remember, we want to identify and analyze his writing strategies for ideas we can use for our own compare/contrast narratives that we will begin brainstorming for tomorrow.**

After we complete the reading, you and your partner will (both partners need to write out the answers in their essay packets for credit (35 pts.):
Answer the following questions using the RACE strategy (restate/answer/cite/explain):

Analyzing Meaning #1-3 and Discovering Rhetorical Strategies #1-4.

**Please be prepared to share your answers with the class for discussion.**

Title: "Past Present"

former inmates, current inmates, people who have never been in prison, people who have had similar experiences, himself

to tell others what it was like, understand his own transformation

Subject (the basic topic of the piece?)—the author a former prison inmate goes back to his former jail and compares/contrasts his current and former self

Tone—depressed, angry, disappointed, nostalgic

Introduction: This year we have both read (ie. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, etc.) and written (college essay, RITS assignment, etc.) personal narrative and compare/contrast essays. We will need to use the skills we learned this year in order to finish our last assignment.

Purpose: In preparation for writing a senior farewell narrative, we are going to read "Past Present" by Jimmy Santiago Baca. In this personal narrative, the author compares/contrasts his experience both as a prisoner in San Quentin, and his return as an author/filmmaker.

Culminating Assignment: We will analyze this work and the author's methods of writing (SOAPSTONE/COMPARE/CONTRAST, RHETORICAL DEVICES, ETC.) in order to help craft our own personal narrative essay that compares/contrasts our first/last day at McKinley High School.

For extra-credit today (for the 5-week) you may (50 pts): 
1. The RITS packet of additional articles
a. annotate each article (underline, highlight, make notes)
b. Choose 3 of the sections (in bold) and explain in a paragraph or 2 how this information is critical to your understanding of the play A Raisin in the Sun
*c. You can also do the extra questions in the back of the packet

2. Castle Learning--log in and complete any available assignments (10 pts. each)
