Last day of school Class of 2014...

The last day of school is always bittersweet for me. I'm so very happy that all of you will be moving on to bigger and better things in the world--hopefully, you will remember your times in this class fondly, because I can honestly say I really enjoyed teaching each and every one of you this year (yes even you too Varin) and looked forward to seeing you each morning. I wish you all nothing but the best of everything in life and hope you accomplish all you really want to do. Nothing will ever be perfect for any of us, but if you work hard and keep at it, you will do great things. Please keep in touch--come and visit or shoot me an email--I love to hear what you are all up to! The class of 2014 will always hold a special place in my memory and heart---now get out of here already you know I don't like being serious for too long!!! See you on the big day!!

Work for the Week of June 9-June 16

For this week: All of our assignments will be completed on the computer. I don't know how long this will take us, but I would assume 5 classes/days. If we finish early, we will figure something else out. But for now, focus on doing these last assignments WELL...not just finishing them. There are also 3 extra credit assignments available for those who need/want them.

Sample paragraph for the essay.....

In the article “Don’t Give Money to Beggars” by Ole Martin Moen, it shows how we need to think about poverty on a global level and not just a local level, by informing the audience that giving to beggars on the streets in the United States is “suboptimal” because in relation to the world as a whole, they do not need it the most and it is therefore wasteful. The author states, “The vast majority of beggars living in the developed world, moreover, have a quality of life that millions in the developing world can only dream of” meaning, that beggars in the United States are not “poor” in comparison to others in the world (Moen). So, if we want to be socially responsible, we need to give to those who are in need the most, those in areas of the world who are the most poor and suffer the severest conditions, not to those who it is just most convenient to give to.

Gospel of Luke, Chapter 6--for Thursday 5/15

Text Notes: While the authorship of the Luke Gospel is uncertain, there is no doubt that this synoptic gospel is one of the most influential pieces of scripture ever written. Purported as the “historical gospel,” Luke chronicles many stories not found in any other gospel (e.g., Good Samaritan, the rich man and Lazarus, the lost coin, prodigal son, and Zacchaeus, among others). In Chapter 6, the author touches on the public ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. The chapter employs various literary devices and touches on issues ranging from labor and law to justice and love.
