Please copy the following notes into the Research Section of your notebook--keep these materials together and separate!!

Inquiry Question: questions posed by researchers about their areas of investigation to be answered through research.

Claim: A claim is the main argument of an essay. It is probably the single most important part of an academic paper. A claim defines your paper's goals and it must be argumentative--not an opinion.

*Click on the link here for more information on making claims and what they are: claim worksheet

Source: Where (article, book) you are getting your information from.

Relevant evidence: connects directly to the claim and is related to the issue in an appropriate way.

Sufficient evidence: thoroughly reinforces the claim in an argument.  Usually, several pieces of evidence are needed to be "enough" to prove your claim true.

Reasoning: sound or logical relationships among ideas, including relationship to the claim. Why is this evidence valid?

Research Portfolio: the binder or electronic folder where students physically or electronically store and organize all the material related to their personal research.

We will watch this brief video on gender gaps before you begin your work today: gender gap video

Please make sure you are using RACE for all of your questions:

1. Some of the gender gaps that remain in today's society are (fill in with the answer). On page 42 it states, ("fill in with textual evidence"). This shows (fill in with explanation if possible).

Today we will spend the majority of class writing Quick Write #2: 2 advantages one society had over another  (obviously, the Europeans or "Old World" over the Native Americans or "New World")

Not only will you state the 2 advantages:

  • EXPLAIN how your examples gave that society an advantage.

I have provided you with an organizer that I want you to finish first before you begin writing. (If you want to type just copy and paste the information below into a document I did not make a download)

Friday's Agenda: Quiz #1 Guns, Germs, and Steel (open book) will be on Tuesday 2/9

1. If you did not complete at least 5 questions from the video yesterday, that should be done (with headphones only please)--see yesterday's blog post
2. Work on completing questions 5-16 for Worksheet #1 Guns, Germs, and Steel (GG&S)--NOT THE QUICK WRITE. It is linked to Monday's blog post if you need to see it/lost your copy etc. (We will do some of these together to get started)
3. Vocabulary sentences if you have not done them yet---some will be on Tuesday's quiz.

****So here's the deal, since this worksheet is so labor intensive (hard), I will give everyone an 8/8 for Quick Write #1 for completing questions #1-16, just write "8/8 please:)" under "Quick Write #1" ---for those of you who are still half-asleep--you don't have to do quick write #1.*************

P.S.--Please make sure you didn't take any of the hard copies of GG&S with you--I am missing quite a few already and need them back!!! If you wouldn't mind using the hyperlink that would be great, because I am not sure I have enough now. Also, will make your life much easier for copying/pasting textual evidence if you are typing your answers. Thanks!

Enjoy the snowy weekend!
