.......Henry David Thoreau's "Civil Disobedience" is an essay that attempts to persuade readers to oppose unjust government policies in general and the Mexican War and the institution of slavery in particular. 

Point of View

.......Thoreau wrote "Civil Disobedience" in first-person point of view.

Issues Discussed 

....... Thoreau says it is the duty of all citizens to disobey unjust government policies. They should express their opposition through acts of civil disobedience, such as refusing to pay taxes. Thoreau cites two examples of unjust U.S. government policies: the continuation of the institution of slavery and the prosecution of the Mexican War.

Thesis

.......Citizens of good conscience should actively oppose unjust government policies through nonviolent resistance, such as refusal to pay taxes. They should even be willing to go to jail rather than yield to immoral or unethical government laws and activities

Before we start working independently, let's do a couple more questions together:
6. Identify an idea that is common to both par. 3 and 11. Explain.
Both paragraphs 3 and 11 suggest that the role of government is critical in providing citizens with tools and resources they need to succeed in modern society. In paragraph 3, Bhutto claims that, "the quality of our society and the future of our people" depends on "the investment in an individual, through education and health." In par. 11, she claims, "What kind of future we...build depends on...and the use of our economic resources," again stressing the importance of improving the lives of citizens.
7. Which areas does Bhutto identify as key to Pakistan's future in par. 11? Give evidence.
Bhutto claims that the political, economic, and judiciary systems are key to Pakistan's future. She says, "What kind of future we build depends...our resources." (par 11).
