4 ways of characterization/Macbeth Hw #2 (20 pts.)

There are 4 basic ways an author creates a character:

Narrator's direct comments--the narrator just tells you something about him/her
Physical traits-what a character looks like
Speech, thoughts, actions of a character--what a character says and does
Speech, thoughts, and actions of other characters towards that character--what other people say about them/act towards them

There will be no narrator's comments as this is a play and there is no narrator.
FOR HOMEWORK, I want you to take your notes from Act I, Scene ii, and today's reading, and write a short paragraph describing Macbeth at the beginning of the play. Try and use each of the other 3 types of characterization if possible. We will do an example of how to incorporate the information into a sentence in class. Be sure to use adjectives in your answer.

Notes on Paradox/Lines that describe Macbeth

Paradox: statement that seems to contradict itself but, in fact, reveals some element of truth.

Ex:
You can save money by spending it.
"What a pity that youth must be wasted on the young."

Ok, we know that Macbeth is a tragic hero so he is going to start the play in a dignified position. On your scrap of paper, write down at least 2 or 3 adjectives that describe him and the lines from the play that support your claims. (due in class/no homework)

Notes #1 for Macbeth

tragedy--presents the downfall of a dignified character who is involved in historically or socially significant events. This fall is usually caused by a flaw in his character.

tragic hero--the main character, dignified who has a downfall based mainly on a poor character trait. He/she evokes both pity and fear in readers because the audience realizes the struggles faced by him are necessary parts of human life.

tragic flaw--whatever is wrong with his character that causes his destruction--usually leads to an error in judgment.
