New Beginnings, Practice, etc. for Class of 2014 Seniors

10 things we will do today in class amongst other things:
1. Look at the class blog page as well as exploring various sections/links on it. Bookmarking the blog.
2. Read over the course syllabus.
3. Look at/practice using the class drop-box.
4. Look at/practice using the online quiz link.
5. Open a Google Docs/Drive acct.
6. Review basic Microsoft Word prodedures and functions (copy/paste/saving to userspace, etc.).
7. Briefly discuss how to use the blog to type rather than hand-write assignments done in class.
8. Learn how to leave a comment on the blog.
9. Learn how to send me an email.
10. Learn where to look in the room for homework, what to do, pg #, put binders, find textbooks, etc.

Questions for ch. 39

Hey guys---by now you've probably realized that I am going to be out--it was not planned for me to leave this early and a complete surprise to me. I had planned on being there until spring break but my doctor told me otherwise. Anyways, please keep up with your work while I am gone and put it in the drop box. I don't want anyone failing or losing points, but it is up to you to keep up with it. Work with a friend for help if you need to until (hopefully) you get someone in there that can help you out. Email me with any concerns please.

ch. 39 pg. 187
1. Why does Lydia want Mr. Bennet to take her to Brighton for the summer?
2. What news does Elizabeth hear about Ms. King and Wickham?
3. On pg. 189 it is basically Lydia speaking--describe her using at least 1-2 adjectives and give an example for each as support.
4. On pg. 190 Lydia is described as someone who "seldom listened to anybody for more than half a minute"--what do you think this says about her and her personality? What can do you think this may foreshadow about her future?
5. Look at the last paragraph of ch. 39 on pg. 191---what topic was under "frequent discussion" by Mr. and Mrs. Bennet? Who seems to be going along with it and who seems to be resisiting?

Read or re-read Ch. 35 from yesterday and Ch. 36 to answer the following questions:

P and P Hw #3 ---20 pts.

Epistolary novel--Strictly speaking, an epistolary novel is a novel whose story is told through a series of letters. In a novel otherwise told in third person, letters allow the reader to hear the characters' voices more intimately. They also give an impression of immediacy and authenticity.

Hw: Write a letter (as Elizabeth) to Darcy explaining why you turned down his proposal. Or, write a letter as Wickham to Darcy explaining what happened to the money you have received from him and that you want more (and why you should have it).

Work for Monday Ch. 34

Read Ch. 34 in Pride and Prejudice and write out the following:
1. Why is Darcy's proposal somewhat insulting to Elizabeth?
2. How does she respond to his proposal?
3 What are her reasons for denying him? Why does Darcy say that she does?
4. What is his explanation as to why he broke up Jane and Bingley? What are his other reservations against her?
5. How does the conversation end? Does it seem like they can ever get together after this? Explain your choice.

1. What does Elizabeth learn from Colonel Fitzwilliam (Darcy's cousin--if you didn't catch it or want to add it to your character map--but he's not that important)?

Ch. 28-29 questions

Just when Elizabeth decides to take her dad's advice and go for Wickham, she finds out he is now dating a girl named Miss King who has just inherited a large sum of money so he drops Elizabeth. She decides to go visit her friend Charlotte (no Mrs. Collins) at Lady Catherine's estate (Rosings).

1. How does Mr. Collins try to make Elizabeth feel as he gives her the tour of his home?
2. Describe Lady Catherine's daughter (physical traits).

Ch. 29
1. Par. 1 states that Mr. Collins got "exactly what he had wished for"---what is it?
2.What does Mr. Collins tell Elizabeth not to be overly concerned about (this is an insult)?
