Copy the following information in your "Reading and Writing Strategies" section of your notebook

How to Write Meaningful Vocabulary Sentences
Types of sentences:
1. Pointless: Does not show the word's meaning or your understanding of the word
2. Replace: Does not show you understand the word because many other words could replace it and it would still make sense
3. Dictionary: Does not show you understand the word because you just reworded the definition
***4.Meaningful: Shows both the word's meaning and your understanding of it by using the word correctly in a precise and vivid context

Example: (We will fill these in with the type of sentence it is)
dissension (n.) – strong disagreement; a contention or quarrel; discord
1. There was dissension in the classroom. ____________________________
2. Dissension is a disagreement you have. ___________________________
3. We learned the word dissension today. ____________________________
4. There was dissension between the two presidential candidates when they discussed their views on tax reform. ___________________________________

Directions: In your notes, write 1 meaningful sentences for each of the following 2 vocabulary words:
1. disseminate (v.) – to scatter or spread widely, as though sowing seed
2. prevailed (v.) – to have been or proven superior in strength, power, or influence


*Ms. Johnson or Mrs. Caccamise will check to your sentences for accuracy and we will share some on the board.

For the rest of class we will:
1. We will read from the bottom of page 17, "Meanwhile, the state Welfare..." to the bottom of page 21 "however kindly intentioned." You will read from there, "My mother remained..." until the end of the chapter on page 23.
