Examples of Direct Characterization (give page #):

DON'T COPY THE NOTES BELOW--YOU WILL RECEIVE A HANDOUT!
Characterization: the process by which the writer reveals the personality of a character to you. There are two types:
  •  Direct characterization-you are told what kind of person the character is--no thinking involved!!
  • Example: "He was a caring and thoughtful man"
  • Indirect characterization-you are shown what kind of person the character is---you figure it out!!
  • Example: He took care of his mother every day after school, even though he didn't have to.
STEAL METHOD OF INDIRECT CHARACTERIZATION (Notes available here)
S-SPEECH (What does the character say? How does the character speak?
T-THOUGHTS (What is revealed through the character's private thoughts and feelings?)
E-EFFECTS ON OTHERS (What is revealed through the character's effect on other people? How do other characters feel or behave in reaction to the character?)
A-ACTIONS (What does the character do? How does the character behave?
L-LOOKS (What does the character look like? How does the character dress?
