Terms to know: Elements of a play
monologue--is a speech delivered by one person where he/she expresses his/her thoughts usually to other characters on stage who can hear them.
Soliloquy--a speech in which a character speaks his/her thoughts aloud. Think of a "voice over" in a movie. The character is usually on stage alone, or with a light on him/her surrounded by darkness.
The PURPOSE of a soliloquy is to reveal a character's inner thoughts, feelings to the audience only. It also creates dramatic irony.
Dramatic irony--when we (the audience) know things the other characters do not know.
