Text #1: TAG: Julius Caesar, play, William
Shakespeare
Whose
perspective on government/society are you analyzing? Brutus
What is this author/character’s position on who should be making decisions? Why does this person feel this way?
Brutus is convinced by Cassius that the people
need to make a choice to get rid of Caesar because he is becoming too powerful
and they need to stop him now before it’s too late. So, in this case, Brutus
has decided that the people need to take action and make decisions in society.
Give one piece of textual evidence from this text that proves the author/character’s position (stated in answer above).
Why man, he doth bestride
the narrow world like a Colossus, and we petty men walk under his huge legs and
peep about to find ourselves dishonorable graves. Men at some time are masters of their
fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves, that we are underlings.
(Act I, Scene 2, Line 135-141) --Cassius speaking to Brutus
Explain how your textual evidence proves the author/character’s position.
Cassius tells Brutus the reason that Caesar is in
charge, and not them, is because the people have not taken action. Brutus is
convinced that he as a citizen needs to kill Caesar to change government.
