"Past Present" by Jimmy Santiago Baca

Introduction: This year we have both read (ie. The Autobiography of Malcolm X, etc.) and written (college essay, RITS assignment, etc.) personal narrative and compare/contrast essays. We will need to use the skills we learned this year in order to finish our last assignment.

Purpose: In preparation for writing a senior farewell narrative, we are going to read "Past Present" by Jimmy Santiago Baca. In this personal narrative, the author compares/contrasts his experience both as a prisoner in San Quentin, and his return as an author/filmmaker.

Culminating Assignment: We will analyze this work and the author's methods of writing (SOAPSTONE/COMPARE/CONTRAST, RHETORICAL DEVICES, ETC.) in order to help craft our own personal narrative essay that compares/contrasts our first/last day at McKinley High School.
