Copy the following notes into your notes or if you have room in your packet

aside-- when a character's dialogue is spoken but not heard by the other actors on the stage. Asides are useful for giving the audience special information about the other characters onstage or the action of the plot. They also create dramatic irony.

Soliloquy--a speech in which a character speaks his/her thoughts aloud. Think of a "voice over" in a movie. The character is usually on stage alone, or with a light on him/her surrounded by darkness.

The PURPOSE of a soliloquy is to reveal a character's inner thoughts, feelings, and plans to the audience. It also creates dramatic irony.

Dramatic irony--when we (the audience) know things the other characters do not know.
--What is the BIG thing so far that we know that other characters don't?
