In the article “Don’t Give Money to Beggars” by
Ole Martin Moen, it shows how we need to think about poverty on a global level
and not just a local level, by informing the audience that giving to beggars on
the streets in the United States is “suboptimal” because in relation to the world as a whole,
they do not need it the most and it is therefore wasteful. The author
states, “The vast majority of beggars living in the developed world, moreover,
have a quality of life that millions in the developing world can only dream of”
meaning, that beggars in the United States
are not “poor” in comparison to others in the world (Moen). So, if we want to be socially responsible, we need to
give to those who are in need the most, those in areas of the world who are the
most poor and suffer the severest conditions, not to those who it is just most
convenient to give to.
